Creating a Seamless Shower Space - Q&A with our Co-Director Leigh Price

Starting your bathroom renovation project and needing help with your shower selection? We spoke to our Co-Director, Leigh Price, who provided his top tips for creating a seamless shower area.

What kind of layout can I have if my bathroom is awkwardly-shaped?

When dealing with awkwardly shaped rooms with low or sloped ceilings, a bespoke shower enclosure makes the ideal solution, as these can be made to measure, and cut to fit specifically within your space.

If you have unsightly fixtures such as pipes or a cistern, don't worry as these can be concealed with a little forethought. The easiest method to achieve a completely seamless appearance is to add a floor length stud wall, as opposed to building a box to fit around the specific area you wish to cover.

Stud walls are extremely popular, as not only will they conceal anything you don't want on show, but they can also serve as extra storage space.

This can be achieved by building a recessed shelf into your stud wall, which cleverly introduces shelf space without the need for extra bathroom furniture, therefore maximising your available floor space.

Recessed shelves can even be accessorised with LED light strips for a truly show-stopping finish.

How do I know what type of shower is best suited to my space?

When it comes to selecting the shower for your bathroom renovation, it is important to first consider how many people will be using it, and how often it will be used, as this will determine the quality of shower that you should equip your space with.

For a 'high traffic' bathroom that experiences frequent usage such as the main family bathroom, I suggest opting for a better quality shower enclosure, as they tend to be fitted with durable rollers and fittings that are more capable of withstanding daily wear and tear.

If you're lucky enough to also have an en-suite or guest bathroom, you can generally save on your shower enclosure and fittings for these rooms (even if these are used often), as generally we tend to take more care of the bathrooms that aren't designated for family use.

Walk-in vs enclosure - which shower should I choose?

If you're unsure whether to opt for a walk-in shower with a screen or a shower enclosure, I would start by considering the space you're working with.Walk-in showers:

Walk-in showers:

If you have a decent-sized bathroom, a walk-in shower is a great option as it uses less glass overall which makes for a more seamless/open-plan finish, and in turn creates the illusion of a larger space.

Not only will your bathroom appear more visually appealing, but many homeowners prefer a walk-in shower for the overall experience it provides, as the convenience of grabbing your towel directly from your shower without having to step out is a lovely bonus.

Another favourable element of a walk-in shower is the minimal effort it requires when it comes to cleaning it, as you won't need to worry about scrubbing shower doors that harbour built up soap scum and dirt, and can instead simply wipe down your glass panel for a spotless shine!

Problems arise when walk-in showers are built in rooms that don't have sufficient space, as the lack of protection from the glass can lead to water spillages and even overflow from the shower tray.Enclosure showers:

Enclosure showers:

Shower enclosures are a great option for those who wish to avoid any risk of a potential draft when showering, as you will be fully immersed in the shower's steam for the ultimate comfortable experience.

Contrary to popular belief, shower enclosures can be practically used in both larger and smaller bathrooms, as in tighter spaces there is the option for including bi-fold or in-folding doors.
